Stone châteaux and long afternoons.
France comes in several registers and the studio has worked most of them: the formal Loire châteaux, the stone farms of Provence, the Côte d'Azur stripped of its season. Each asks for something slightly different. The studio travels to France several times a year and keeps a running list of caterers, florists, and musicians it would work with again.
The light in Provence is harder than Italy — cleaner, with more blue in the shadows and a different quality at the edges of the afternoon. It requires a different approach to portraits: more shade, more patience, a willingness to wait for the softening that comes around seven. The châteaux of the Loire are more forgiving; the stone absorbs light evenly and the interiors work at almost any hour.
The studio brings to France the same unhurried method it uses everywhere: arrive early, follow the day, stay until the last useful light is gone.

Which regions of France do you work in most?
Provence and the Loire Valley are where most of our French commissions take place. Provence in May and June — before the lavender peaks but after the last cold evenings — has a quality of light that is genuinely different from Italy: harder, cleaner, with more blue in the shadows. The Loire châteaux photograph well across the season; the stone holds light in a way that makes almost any hour workable. We've also worked the Dordogne, Normandy, and the Basque Country, and we're happy to discuss any region you're considering.

What are the legal requirements for a wedding in France as a foreign couple?
A civil ceremony in France requires prior residency or a long administrative process, which is why most international couples opt for a symbolic ceremony in France and complete the legal paperwork in their home country beforehand. The symbolic ceremony can take place anywhere — château, lavender field, private estate — without restriction. We've worked with couples who handled this in a dozen different ways and can put you in touch with planners who specialise in it.

Do you travel to France for a single wedding?
Yes. France is a three-to-four hour journey from our base, depending on the region, and we plan accordingly. We arrive the day before and build recovery time into the schedule on either side. Travel costs — transport, accommodation, meals — are passed on at cost and itemised clearly. For weddings with a pre-wedding shoot or a second day, we discuss the logistics in advance.
